È stata presentata ieri sera la performance dell’artista, tra i pochi in Italia a operare manualmente mediante la tecnica del “wrapping”, che ha origine dall’antica arte della tessitura di arazzo a telaio verticale.

“Silenti”, la nuova performance e installazione tessile di Thomas De Falco si è svolta ieri sera (22 giugno) presso il Palazzo dei Priori, oggi sede comunale, di Città di Castello. L’artista ha collocato il suo nuovo lavoro nell’atrio principale del Palazzo del Comune della cittadina umbra, opera incompiuta di Angelo da Orvieto (1322-38), dopo essersene innamorato per la severa ed elegante architettura.

Tra i due imponenti pilastri ottagonali che sostengono le volte dell’atrio, si sono trovati due soggetti, un uomo e una donna. Alla donna erano collegati lunghi wrapping, che a partire dai capelli si prolungavano verso l’alto dell’architettura, mentre dalle mani e dalle braccia del soggetto maschile si estendeva una grande radice di scultura tessile verso la pavimentazione dell’atrio.
I due performer, inizialmente rigorosamente immobili e a occhi chiusi, si muovevano impercettibilmente nello spazio scultoreo, congiungendosi tramite i wrapping all’antica architettura. Questa materia tessile, che ha dato corpo all’installazione, è stata protagonista fondamentale della performance e mezzo che l’artista ha usato per “dare vita e parola alla materia”, ottenendo una sintesi artistica tra corpo, tessitura e architettura.
In questo lavoro De Falco affronta il tema dell’incomunicabilità, intesa nel suo significato più universale. Come due linee rette e parallele, tra i due soggetti, non c’è possibilità di incontro.
Resta il silenzio, che ha dato titolo all’opera, ancor più amplificato dalla solenne architettura medioevale del Palazzo dei Priori.

La performance è stata accompagnata dalla presenza di uno strumento musicale.

Fino a oggi, 23 di giugno, è inoltre visitabile presso la Galleria delle Arti di Luigi Amadei di Città di Castello una scultura tessile dell’artista Thomas De Falco esposta a novembre 2016 al museo MAXXI di Roma in occasione della sua performance ed installazione tessile ROOTS.

Il wrapping

La ricerca scultorea di De Falco sin dagli esordi è racchiusa in una particolare tecnica tessile, il wrapping, che consiste nell’avvolgere attorno ad un’anima di materia tessile altra materia tessile, creando forme che ricordano quelle delle radici degli alberi.
Il rapporto con la natura per De Falco si concretizza nel momento in cui l’artista cuce delle foglie su dei quaderni: si tratta di un’operazione di studio e di ricerca, combinata all’uso del disegno, durante i quali fa nascere l’idea di quello che poi diventerà un arazzo, una scultura tessile o una performance ed installazione tessile. One of the very few artists in Italy to manually perform the “wrapping” technique, whose roots lie in the ancient art of loom-woven tapestry, was performing the last night.

“Silenti”, Thomas De Falco’s latest performance and installation, was hosted yesterday (22nd June) at Palazzo dei Priori, now the town hall, in Città di Castello. The artist decided to locate his new work in the town hall lobby of this small city in Umbria, an unfinished work by Angelo da Orvieto (1322-38), after falling in love with its harsh but elegant architecture.

Two subjects, a man and a woman, had bee standing stand between the huge octagonal columns holding up the vaulted roof. The woman had wrappings attached to her hair, extended up towards the top of the architecture, while huge sculpted textile roots were extend from the hands and arms of the male subject down to the lobby floor.
The two performers, who were initially standing absolutely still with their eyes closed, then moved imperceptibly through the sculptural space and connected themselves to the old architecture through their wrappings. The textile material giving body to the installation was the real star of the performance and the means the artist uses to “give life and words to material”, creating an artistic synthesis of body, wrapping and architecture.
In this work, De Falco looked at the subject of incommunicability, understood in its universal meaning. Just like two straight parallel lines, the two subjects never come together. All that is left is silence, providing the title of this work, amplified even further by the solemn mediaeval architecture of Palazzo dei Priori.

The performance was accompanied by a musical instrument.

Until today, 23 June, it is also possible to visit at Galleria delle Arti by Luigi Amadei in Città di Castello a textile sculpture by the artist Thomas De Falco, exhibited in occasion of his performance and textile installation ROOTS at MAXXI Museum in Rome, in November 2016.

Wrapping

Right from the very beginning of his career, De Falco’s sculptural experimentation has been entirely focused on a special kind of textile technique called “wrapping”, which consists in wrapping textile material around a central core also made of a textile material to create forms reminiscent of tree roots.
For De Falco interaction with nature occurs at the very moment when the artist stitches pages into notebooks: this is a study and research procedure, combined with the use of drawing, from which an idea emerges that will then be turned into a tapestry, textile sculpture or textile performance/installation. This means that in De Falco’s works nature is transformed into a textile material that the artist then shapes as he sees fit.
