Dal 25 gennaio al 26 marzo 2017 il MACRO – Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Roma ospita la mostra personale di Rafael Y. Herman dal titolo The Night Illuminates The Night, curata da Giorgia Calò e Stefano Rabolli Pansera, e promossa da Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Crescita culturale – Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali.

La mostra, nella sede di MACRO Testaccio, si presenta come una grande installazione ambientale in cui dallo spazio buio emergono le opere che si rivelano come epifanie. Nella dialettica fra tenebre e luce, infatti, si sviluppa la poetica di Rafael Y. Herman il cui sguardo rivela un nuovo approccio alla realtà che nasce e si struttura nell’oscurità.

The Night Illuminates The Night si concentra sul lavoro cominciato nel 2010 e completato nel 2016. In questo periodo l’artista ha stabilito un dialogo con i grandi maestri della tradizione occidentale che hanno rappresentato nel corso dei secoli la Terra Santa, pur non avendola mai visitata, ma ispirandosi alle fonti bibliche e letterarie. Rafael Y. Herman ripercorre questa tradizione con il proprio metodo: lo scatto notturno senza ausili elettronici e manipolazioni digitali, che svela ciò che non si vede a occhio nudo.

From 25 January to 26 March 2017 MACRO – the Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome – hosts a solo show by Rafael Y. Herman entitled The Night Illuminates The Night, curated by Giorgia Calò and Stefano Rabolli Pansera, and supported by Roma Capitale, Department of Cultural Growth – Superintendent Capitolina of Cultural Heritage.

The exhibition at MACRO Testaccio takes the form of a large environmental installation in which the works emerge from the darkness of the space like revelations. The poetics of Rafael Y. Herman develops in this dialectic between darkness and light. The artist’s gaze reveals a new approach to reality born and structured in darkness.

The Night Illuminates The Night features works that began in 2010 and was completed in 2016. During this period Herman established a dialogue with the great masters of the western tradition who have depicted the Holy Land across the centuries without ever having been there, relying on biblical and literary sources. Herman traces back through this tradition using his own method: nocturnal photography, without electronic aids or digital manipulation, showing only what is visible to the naked eye.
