La Galleria Cardi è lieta di presentare a FIAC 2019 una mostra personale del grande artista italiano Mimmo Rotella (Catanzaro, 1918 – Milan, 2006).
In esposizione circa 40 opere delle serie Blank e Sovrapitture realizzate dall’artista negli anni ’80. Questa mostra di qualità museale rappresenta una eccezionale opportunità di poter ammirare lavori raramente visibili.

I blanks, detti anche coperture, sono ottenuti partendo dal manifesto pubblicitario coperto da una velina monocroma posta a silenziarne il messaggio. Sono stati esposti per la prima volta nel gennaio 1981 a Milano, presentati dal critico francese Pierre Restany che li definisce “un terzo capitolo fondamentale del linguaggio dell’affiche”. Applicati su tela o su lamiera metallica, i blanks raggiungono dimensioni imponenti segnando un punto di rottura con i vecchi codici di riferimento di una società messa in discussione dalle tensioni degli anni Settanta. Dalle veline spesso emergono indizi dell’immagine sottostante. Dichiara l’artista “è la rappresentazione della fine di un’immagine. Dietro il blank c’è il mistero dell’immagine ormai obsoleta, la presenza appena percettibile di alcuni frammenti di questa immagine, che si può dire ormai ‘deteriorata’, come l’impressione di una latenza metafisica dell’immagine” (Rotella, 1981).
Subito dopo i blanks, Rotella approda a una nuova tecnica: la sovrapittura. L’immagine, icona riconoscibile e di dominio pubblico, è ancora centrale nella sua poetica e nel caso delle sovrapitture l’artista interviene con un gesto pittorico rude, veloce e sicuro su manifesti integri o già lacerati, unendo così la prassi pittorica – nella sua accezione più attuale, influenzata dalla Bad Painting, dalla Transavanguardia e dal Graffitismo – al linguaggio del décollage che ha caratterizzato la carriera di Rotella fin dagli esordi.
“Mi accorgo che la pittura cambia. […] Si deve tornare a una pittura barbarica di tipo semiespressionista dai colori piuttosto brutti. […] insomma un’antipittura, una bad painting che poi diventa bella pittura, buona pittura, forte, geniale, quasi magica” (Rotella, 2002).
I primi lavori così ottenuti sono esposti nella primavera del 1986 a Parma, dove i soggetti delle tele presentate spaziano da Elvis Presley a Caravaggio, da James Dean alla pubblicità del Crodino, mostrando la vitalità esplosiva che caratterizza lo sguardo dell’artista durante la seconda metà degli anni Ottanta.

Cardi Gallery is pleased to present at FIAC 2019 a museum quality solo exhibition of the great Italian artist Mimmo Rotella (Catanzaro, 1918 – Milan, 2006).
The exhibition will focus on the ‘Blanks’ and ‘Sovrapittura’ series conceived by Mimmo Rotella in the 1980s and will represent a rare opportunity to see these body of works.

The process leading to the creation of a blank, or covering as it is also known, consists in applying a monochrome tissue paper over a poster, to silence its advertising message. The blanks were exhibited for the first time in January 1981 in Milan, presented by the French critic Pierre Restany who called them “a third fundamental chapter in the language of posters”. Applied on canvas or metal sheet, the blanks reach impressive dimensions, marking a breaking point with the old codes of reference of a society challenged by the tensions of the 1970s. From the tissue often some clues emerge of the image below. The artist stated “it is the representation of the end of an image. Behind the blank is the mystery of an image that has become obsolete, the almost invisible presence of a few fragments of this image, that could be described henceforth as ‘degraded’, like the impression of a metaphysical latency of the image “(Rotella, 1981).

Immediately after the blanks, Rotella approached a new technique: sovrapittura or over-painting. The image, a recognizable icon in the public domain, is still central in his poetry and in the case of over-paintings the artist intervenes with a rough, fast and secure pictorial gesture on integral or torn posters. This way he combines the pictorial praxis – in his most current meaning, influenced by Bad Painting, by the Transavanguardia and by Graffitismo – to the language of décollage that has characterized Rotella’s career since the beginning.

“I notice that painting is changing. […] We must return to a semi-expressionist barbaric painting of rather ugly colors. […] In short, an anti-painting, a bad painting that then becomes beautiful painting, good painting, strong, brilliant, almost magical”(Rotella, 2002).

The first works thus obtained were exhibited in Parma in the spring of 1986, where the subjects of the canvases presented range from Elvis Presley to Caravaggio, from James Dean to the advertising for Crodino, showing the explosive vitality that characterizes the artist’s gaze during the second half of the Eighties.
